Work Is Begun Here On Large Shell Contract
Ammunition Manufacture Will Provide Labor for Over 300 Employees
Tredegar Iron Works here has begun manufacture on the recently awarded $400,000 shell contract of the Navy Department, which will provide work for more than 300 men for at least eight months, company officials said yesterday. Activities preparatory to actual manufacture of the ammunition have been underway for sometime it was said.
The government contract calls for the following munitions:
Four thousand fourteen-inch shells at $44.33 each; 8,000 eight-inch shells at $22.42 each; 4,500 six-inch shells at $10.12 each; 200 eight-inch shells at $37.15 each.
Estimates made by the Navy Department and company officials at the time of the announcement of the contract award were that some 325 men would be given employment.
The Tredegar Iron Works is one of the oldest industries in Richmond. Munitions for the Confederate Army were made there.
