From the Richmond Whig, 7/18/1864, p. 1, c. 3
CHARGED WITH SWINDLING. - John G. Lindsay, of Church Hill, was before the Mayor on Saturday, charged with obtaining $1,200 from Brown, Deane & Co., under false pretences. Mr. Deane stated that Lindsay had, some time since, bought a lot of potatoes and butter from him, representing himself as the agent for Dr. McCaw, of Chimborazo Hospital. He (Deane) sent the bill to Dr. McCaw, who refused to pay it, and denied that he had authorized Lindsay to make purchases for the hospital. At Lindsay's request, the case was continued, and he was admitted to bail.
