From the Richmond Examiner, 2/2/1866, p. 3, c. 4
BODY FOUND – SUSPICION OF FOUL PLAY. – Yesterday morning some negroes gave information to the guard at Libby Prison that they had seen the body of a man floating in the water at the foot of Eighteenth street. Search was instituted, the river dragged and the body found. It proved to be that of Jeremiah O’Brien, Company C, Twenty-fourth Massachusetts Regiment, was supposed to have deserted, he having been missing for several weeks. The body bore marks that some who viewed it costrued into evidences of violence, but that was very uncertain, as the remains were much discoloured and decomposed. The body was deposited in the dead room at the Libby, and the information lodged at military headquarters. It is probably a medical examination will be made.
