GENERAL LEE IN RICHMOND
Last evening, General Robert E. Lee, the honoured President of that time-honoured institution, Washington College, in Lexington, Virginia, arrived in this city by the Central train. He went first to the Spotswood Hotel, but subsequently removed temporarily to the house of a friend.
The General is in most excellent health and is accompanied by his son. He comes to the city for the purpose of meeting and conferring with the Educational Committee, who have under consideration the subject of creating for Washington College five new professorships. It is to be hoped that the Legislature will act speedily and wisely in this matter. We have now as President of the College endowed by General Washington a man beloved by the people, of marked ability, and whose name is a tower of strength, and State co-operation alone is needed to make Washington College one of the most flourishing institutions of the South.
