- The city carts were yesterday busily engaged in dumping loads of cinders from the gas works, with which to construct temporary sidewalks, on Marshall street, near Chimborazo. As soon as a cart would leave its load, however, droves of little boys and girls would pounce upon the cinders like ducks upon a dough-pile, and with bags and baskets carry away all the lumps, leaving nothing but the fine dust and ashes. Under these circumstances, it would seem to be good policy either to supply these urchins with fuel, and thus induce them to discontinue their depredatory incursions, or to use less inflammable substances in the construction of sidewalks.
