Richmond National Cemetery was established to reinter Federal soldiers who died in Richmond prisons and nearby battlefields. It is located on Williamsburg Road, east of Richmond.

1865-09-29, Richmond Whig; disinterment of Union graves in Richmond and on the battlefields will begin on 10/1/1865, having been stopped during the summer months. “Some thousands” buried in Oakwood. Agency in Washington is responsible for issuing permits.
1866-02-07, Richmond Examiner; notes on the Belle Isle Cemetery – 150 bodies buried there, fence erected
1866-08-11, Richmond Dispatch; detailed list of reinterments of Union dead at the various national cemeteries – Belle Isle, Cold Harbor, Malvern Hill, Seven Pines, Fort Harrison, Hollywood and Oakwood included
1867-03-29, Richmond Dispatch; list of National Cemeteries and numbers of dead interred. Richmond Nation Cemetery is noted as “not completed”
1867-08-10, Southern Opinion; description of Belle Isle as a prison camp – notes on the cemetery, the origins of the prison,the current state of the island
1868-06-01, description of Decoration Day activities at Richmond National Cemetery. Article slightly critical of the proceedings, notes that 3000 participants, only 400 white and that the speakers used words “libelling us and insulting our own noble dead”
1869-05-22, official notice of the Decoration Day festivities at Richmond National Cemetery. Coaches running from the “eastern terminus of the city railway.” Col. H. S. Merrill of the Freedmen’s Bureau is on the Committee of Arrangements.
