From the Richmond Dispatch, 5/31/1884, p. 1, c. 4

Decoration of Federal Graves.

Yesterday being National Decoration-day, Phil. Kearny Post observed it at Fredericksburg, Cold Harbor, Seven Pines, Glendale, and Fort Harrison, the Post having been divided into five details for this purpose.

The graves of the Federal dead at Richmond cemetery were decorated by George A. Custer Post, John D. Booker commander.

Two colored military companies paraded and a great many people from this city and Manchester visited the cemetery. Nearly every vehicle in the city for hire was secured for that purpose.

The Blue and the Gray united in doing work of strewing flowers upon the graves of the Union dead.

The Governor, in respect to the day, ordered all the offices in the Capitol to be closed after 12 o’clock M., and it was done. The same order was made on Hollywood Memorial-day.

The custom-house was closed all day, and the post-office a part of the day.
