From the Richmond Examiner, 2/7/1866, p. 3, c. 4

THE “FERRETS.” – CARD FROM MR. G. N. GWATHMEY. – It not being our desire to do any one an injustice, we publish below a letter from Mr. G. N. Gwathmey, in regard to his connection with the “Ferrets Club” in this city. There is a considerable tinge of special pleading in the letter of Mr. Gwathmey. He does not say frankly and fearlessly that he is not a “Ferret,” nor does he state that his name was placed on the committee without his authority; he does not deny that our report of the proceedings is correct, but shelters himself under a weak excuse that he has never signed the proceedings. We care not to state whether, according to the rules, it is necessary or not for each “Ferret” to sign the minutes of their meetings; it is sufficient for us that Mr. Gwathmey was a member of the organization, he joined them of his own will and participated in their meetings, though we will do him the justice to say that we believe he is now heartily ashamed of the bad company he has been in:

RICHMOND, February 5, 1866.

To the Editor of the Examiner:

My attention was called to an article in your paper of this morning, setting forth the object of the so-called “Ferret Club” of this city, with a resolution defining the powers and duties of the members of said club, among the names of whom I see you have printed mine.

My object in addressing you is to state that I have never signed, nor authorized any one else to sign, my name to the proceedings of any society having for its object the purposes indicated by the resolution of the 15th of April, 1865, as published in your paper of the 5th instant, and have, therefore, to request that you do me the justice to publish in your next issue the above notice, in order to relieve me of the injury to which I may otherwise be subjected. Your compliance will much oblige

                                                                                                                     Yours, very respectfully,
                                                                                                                     G. N. GWATHMEY.
