Captain Sallie Tompkins Takes Part in Unique Ceremony.
Captain Sallie L. Tompkins, the only woman holding a commission in the Confederate Army, yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock unveiled a tablet commemorating the site of the Robertson Hospital, 1862-65, at the northwest corner of Third and Main Streets.
The ceremonies were under the auspices of R. E. Lee Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the entire time consumed was less than twenty minutes. Past Commander E. Leslie Spence introduced the speakers, who were Chaplain F. F. Rennie, who offered prayer, and Past Commander John B. Lightfoot, Jr., who made a brief address. Captain Tompkins, who unveiled the tablet, had charge of the hospital during the war.
