MONEY VOTED FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Finance Committee Recommends Appropriation of $41,000 for Use This Year.
CITY TO GET VAN LEW SITE
Ford Estate Heirs Object to Valuation Placed on Hotel Property.

At the request of the City School Board, the Council Committee on Finance last night recommended that $41,000 of the $200,000 guaranteed to be expended on public school buildings this year be made available at once for the acquisition of desirable sites. The School Board has indicated its purpose of acquiring the Van Lew property on East Grace Street, embracing an entire city block, the option price being $25,000. A site is also to be acquired for Springfield School, to cost 11,000, and one for a new colored school. The School Board is having plans prepared for two new white schools, one in the eastern and one in the western part of the city, and for one colored school, work to begin as soon as approved. It was explained that of the entire program laid down for erection of school houses within the next three or four years, this would be all that would be necessary to expend for sites, as several desirable locations are now owned by the city, including a valuable tract on West Cary Street for new Sidney School.
