From the Vermont Phoenix (Brattleboro, Vt.), 4/8/1881, p. 2, c. 4
The report circulated by Democratic and independent journals that President Garfield has removed Miss Van Lew from the Richmond (Va.) post office “to make room for a Mahone repudiationist,” is false in every particular. Miss Van Lew has not held the office of post-mistress of Richmond since the expiration of her term in March, 1877, when she was displaced by President Hayes, who appointed Dr. Gilmer, a union man throughout the war and a native Virginian Republican, now identified with the readjusters. Dr. Gilmer has been reappointed, and this fact alone gives rise to the misrepresentations above referred to.
