MRS. PHOEBE PEMBER, BREVETTED BY LEE, DIES IN PITTSBURG

Savannah, Ga., March 5. – News of the death of Mrs. Phoebe Y. Pember, ninety years of age, and one of the few women of the south brevetted by General Robert E. Lee during the civil war, has been received here. She died at Pittsburg, Pa., yesterday after an illness of three days. Mrs. Pember was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob C. Levy, of Charleston. She married Thomas Pember, of Boston, in 1861, but Mr. Pember died soon afterward; and, being a strong confederate sympathizer, Mrs. Pember went to Richmond and was given charge of Chimborazo hospital, having stated her desire to assist the southern wounded.

Mrs. Pember rendered great service to the confederates in her capacity as matron, and in order to giver her full control of the hospital, General Lee conferred upon her the rank of major. She will be buried here tomorrow in Laurel Grove cemetery.
She has a sister living here.
