A WOMAN’S PROTEST.
City Treasurer Charles H. Phillips this morning received from Miss E. L. Van Lew her annual protest against the payment of taxes. She says:
“I hereby enter my most solemn protest against the principle of taxation without representation. And I further state that I believe all women should, whose taxes are demanded of them, enter protest and continue to do so until woman’s voice is heard in the councils of municipal, State and National organizations.”
Miss Van Lew is about 70 years of age. She has a magnificent home on Church Hill, in this city, which is probably worth $50,000. She was a strong Unionist during the war, and was postmaster here for several years immediately thereafter. She was a warm personal friend of General Grant and entertained him at her home.
