LIBBY PRISON KEEPER DEAD.
Union Troops Threatened to Hang Turner, but He Lived 63 Years.

SUFFOLK, Va., Dec. 5. – Capt. Richard R. Turner, keeper of the famous Libby Prison at Richmond, dropped dead to-day in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, aged sixty-three years.

When taken a prisoner at Richmond by the incoming Federal troops, who were told of the harsh treatment of Union soldiers by the prison officials, Capt. Turner was locked up, with the promise that he should hang on the next morning.

His hair turned white during the night. At the time of his death he was Democratic County Chairman and a successful lumber dealer.
