Rocketts. – This locality now presents a business scene truly gratifying to all who prefer commerce to confiscation and provisions to politics. All along the wharf constructed by the U. S. military authorities the smoke-stacks of sound and sea-going steamers, and the spruce spars of swift schooners stand in thick array; and the sturdy stevedore, with his gang of strong-handed laborers, loads and unloads capacious holds all day long. Flaunting flags, great sign boards, and huge strips of canvass, painted over with the rival claims of this, that, or the other line confront you wherever you go. At the carious Government Departments, such as the Custom House, Commissary and Quartermaster’s Department, U. S. colored infantry now mount guard, and a large fatigue party, consisting principally of men of the 100th New York (whites), are busily engaged loading, for transportation North, a vast pile of shot, shell, and other relics of war.
