From the Richmond Examiner, 6/22/1864
WHOM WE ARE FIGHTING. – By a recent arrangement at the Libby prison, the entry of the prisoners names is not only made to show the State and regiment to which they belong, but the place of their nativity. This has been done with the laudable design of showing to the world at some future day how many different races, tongues, kindred and people the South had to defend herself against. So far, the nativity of Grant's hirelings embrace every discovered country on the face of the globe, with the exception of China, Japan, Hindoostan, and several other more enlightened nations.
Several recent lots of prisoners, classified according to their nativity, showed seventy-five per centum of foreign birth, leaving twenty-five per cent of American born soldiers in the service of the United States.
