From the Richmond Examiner, 4/9/1863

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA,
April 7, 1863

To the Editor of the Examiner:

I suppose through some malevolent feeling or through some base desire to avoid the imprecations of an outraged community, that my name was assumed by one of the late rioters, during the investigation, and thus I find myself classed among the culprits, in the list divulged in the report of the proceedings in relation thereto; and now that I may stand right before the public, I beg the privilege of a place in your journal to say, that I have never yet become so lost in infamy as to be connected with such a depredating rabble.

Very Respectfully,

MARTHA GOODE,
Union Hill, 24th street.
