From the Richmond Dispatch, 11/8/1861, p. 2, c. 2
Fatal Case of Shooting. – About 4 o'clock yesterday morning Patrick Holmes, one of the sentinels at the Louisiana Hospital (Baptist College,) a short distance west of the corporate line, was shot by another, named Hugh McGinley, both being on duty at the time. The ball took effect in the knee, and the wounded man died an hour after the occurrence. McGinley was arrested and carried before Gen. Winder, who sent him to the Mayor of the city, inasmuch as neither of the men were soldiers, but merely hired to guard the hospital. The investigation of the matter was postponed with a view to procure competent testimony. We cannot learn that there had been any previous difficulty between the parties, and it may turn out that the shot was accidental. The Coroner was notified to hold an inquest.
