From the Richmond Dispatch, 1/16/1863, p. 2, c. 2
CITY HOSPITALS. – The City Hospitals for SMALL-POX and VARIOLOID – one near the Alms House, the other at Howard’s Grove – are now ready to receive and accommodate a large number of patients, either white or colored. Being supplied with proper nurses and every requisite which is accessible in these times, patients may rely upon being well attended to. The regular City Hospital, near the Alms House, is reserved for white patients, and the Howard’s Grove Hospital exclusively for colored patients. As the removal of persons suffering from this disease will greatly aid in preventing its spread, it is hoped that our citizens will avail themselves of the advantages afforded by the hospitals. The charges are:
For white patients, $4 per day.
For colored patients, $3 per day.
