From the Richmond Dispatch, 8/27/1861, p. 2
A newly invented cartridge, made by W. R. Hodge, Jr., of Columbia, Tenn., a few of which have been manufactured at the State Armory, in this city, were successfully tried there on yesterday evening. We will not undertake to give a minute account of the mode of action pursued to make them do the work for which they were designed – suffice it, that it worked well. The cartridges seem to be gifted with power to go off at the right time and effectually use up our enemies, which is all that we could ask of them.
