From the Richmond Dispatch, 12/9/1862, p. 1, c. 3
Body Recovered. – The body of a negro man was fished out of the basin yesterday. From appearances it had been in the water for some time. Coroner Sanxay viewed the body and had it buried, not deeming an inquest necessary. The name of the deceased we learn, was Humphrey, slave of Col. Garnett. It will be seen by the report of the Council proceedings that body last night took more effectual steps to have certain exposed parts of the canal fenced in, and the dangerous spots righted with gas.
