From the Richmond Dispatch, 9/16/1862, p. 2, c. 5
TO "MANY VOTERS," and other friends who have invited me to be a candidate for the House of Delegates, I desire to say that I have been called home to attend to duties deemed important to our cause, which alone could have induced me to leave the field at this time. I would not, therefore, feel at liberty, at present, to serve in the House of Delegates, even if I were honored by an election. I feel very grateful for the confirmed confidence of my friends, but must, for the reason stated, decline being a candidate.
Very respectfully,
JOSEPH R. ANDERSON.
