ESCAPE FROM THE PENITENTIARY AND RECAPTURE – Private Thomas Griffith, Company G, Eleventh United States Infantry, convicted of desertion and sentenced to confinement in the Penitentiary for fourteen months, escaped therefrom on Monday evening about 4 P. M., but was soon thereafter recaptured by Policeman George Hix, of the City Police, and restored to the keeping of the Penitentiary. Several other convicts are advertised as having escaped. The guard must be exceedingly remiss in the discharge of their duties.
