SURGEON GENERAL’S OFFICE,
Richmond, Va April 10th 1863
Sir,
Your communication in relation to the payment of attendants at Genl Hospital No. 1, has been received and in reply, I will state that, on account of the large number of Sick and Wounded, it was found absolutely necessary to have more than on hospital Steward employed. The exigencies of the service required additional force of every kind, and proper authority was obtained therefore.
Very Respectfully,
Your Obt. Serv’t,
S. P. Moore
