Medical Director's Office
Richmond, September 25th 1863

Sir:

I request information whether Officers of the day are appointed, and whether they are present at meals to be able to judge of the proper preparation & distribution of food. Repeated complaints have been made to officials from Alabama by men in the 4th Division of the fare at the convalescent tables. I request that you direct a daily report in writing, from the officer of the day in each Division on the Inspection of the food & dining rooms, and that you personally (without previous notice) will inspect the food &c of the Division today, and report to this office.

As many No. Ca. & Ala sick & wounded still remain in Chimborazo, I direct that as soon as possible, you transfer all from these states to the Divisions assigned to these states in other Hospls, except those who will be injured by removal, and Stewards transfer those from other states according to the table of apportionment sent you.

Very Respectfully,
    Yr Obt Servt
         Wm. A. Carrington
    Med. Director
