William A. Carrington CSR (M331): Inspection Report of General Hospital #2

Genl,
I personally inspected the Mississippi Hospital (Genl Hosp No. 2) on yesterday. The Surgeon in charge is a Mississippian very experienced as an operator - energetic & earnest in discharge of most of his duties. His hospital is deficient in the scrupulous neatness & order that I believe characterizes most of the Hospls in this city - I had admonished him in proper time & found him not disposed to take reproof in the proper spirit & had designated him to the Surgeon Genl for exchange with a surgeon now in [the] field. The building is unsuitable & would have been vacated but for its convenience to the Canal & depots - It has for this reason been the receptacle for the worst cases, thence out of 160 in the Hospl about 50 have limbs amputated - I have had 40 cases removed, ordered an experienced surgeon to the assistance of Surgn Holloway & indicated to him the points in which his administration is deficient & in which correction must be effective.

Very Respectfully,
    Your Obedient Servant
        Wm. A. Carrington

Genl. S. Cooper
Adj. & Inspector General, Richmond, Va.
