From the Richmond Whig, 5/30/1862, p. 2, c. 2

THE CLAY STATUE. - It seems to be nobody’s business to give attention to the statue of Henry Clay, in the Capitol Square. Consequently, it is covered with dust, and the platform upon which it stands is well coated with mud. We insert this paragraph, with the hope that some person, after reading it, may conceive it to be his duty or privilege to put and keep the statue in good condition. If the State authorities will have nothing to do with it, let the City Council, as a matter of municipal credit, take some charge of it.
