Boat Lincoln Used To Be Coal Barge

A coal carrying barge will be made out of the hull of the old steamer River Queen, which was burned some weeks ago on the Potomac river. The machinery in the boat will be removed, thoroughly overhauled, and used on another boat.

The River Queen is one of the oldest ships on the river. It was launched in 1864, during the civil war, and was used by the Federal Government as a transport. At the close of the war the ship was placed in commercial use. For years it was recognized as the handsomest boat on the river. Because of its beauty, it was selected to convey President Lincoln and the peace commissioners from Washington to City Point on the James river, where they were to meet a similar party representing the Confederate government.
