***In consequence of the great difficulty of procuring paper, and of its still greater expense when procured, we have been, as a matter of justice, in self-defence, reluctantly compelled to advance upon the price of Fantine (as first advertised) from $1.25 to $2. Those, however, who, upon the original advertisement, remitted the amount indicated, will receive the book without additional charge; and even at $2 it is the cheapest literary purchase that can be made in our Confederacy.

FANTINE

In the first of five novels, each an independent story, but all embrace in the unique and dramatic work,

LES MISERABLES,

at once the most powerful and artistic of modern works of fiction. As an effort of genius it has immortalized

VICTOR HUGO.

Extract from the (London) Westminster Review.

“The foundation of half a dozen great reputations might be discovered in the pages of Les Miserables. * * * The presence of genius is felt by the reader in every chapter and page. A deep insight into human nature; a warm and almost passionate sympathy with human suffering; a pictorial power scarcely rivalled in our days; a dramatic force which strikes out new and thrilling effects in every new situation; an inexhaustible variety of character, incident, and illustration; and a vivid eloquence, absolutely unequalled by any living author of the same class—these are some, and only some, of the leading qualities by means of which VICTOR HUGO has made ‘Les Miserables’ one of the great literary monuments of the century. It is one of the masterpieces of the age which has produced it.

The remaining four numbers of Les Miserables will be published as rapidly as possible; and in consequence of the great demand for Fantine, early orders are respectfully solicited, our motto being, “first come, first served.”

Price $2.00. The usual discount made to the trade.
