General

As you have decided that I cannot be assigned to duty where I now am and have been serving for the last two months to the satisfaction of my Brigade, Division and Corps Commanders I must respectfully tender my resignation to take effect from the 31st days of December 1864.

There are several members of the Battalion, I recently commanded, to be tried by Court Martial I am witness. The Battalion (Castle Thunder Battn) having been disbanded it is necessary to inform the different commands, to which the men properly belonged of the disposition made of the men. This will take me some time as I think there are over one hundred and ten different commands to write to, and already some officers are enquiring of me the whereabouts of their men so that they can properly arrange their rolls.

General, in taking leave of your Department I do so with grief –”I have tried to be all a soldier should be – Many are trying to get out of the field. I am begging to be kept in it.

But Sir I am respectfully
Yr. Obt. Servt
