Dear Sir,

I have the honor to solicit at your hands an appointment in the Army of the Confederate States.

In regard to my qualifications I wish to state that I was a cadet at the Va. Mil. Institute for two years, and for one year a cadet at the U. S. Mil. Academy at West Point, from which, (the latter place) I resigned my commission, upon the presentation of the oath of allegiance to my class last May. I will further state that I am a 2d Lieut. in the Provisional Army of Va and it is my earnest desire to obtain a position in the regular Army of Confederate States, though I am ready and willing to serve Va & the South in any capacity whatever.

In relation to my character, and qualifications, [page break] I beg leave to refer to Gov. Letcher, Col. F. H. Smith, Col. T. J. Jackson, Col. Angus W. McDonald, Col. David Funston, Hon. A. R. Boteler, and Col. Benjamin Ewell.
