From the Richmond Dispatch, 3/18/1863, p. 2, c. 2

DIED.

…Burned to death, on Friday, 13th inst, by the explosion at the Laboratory, ALICE E, daughter of Benjamin and Emily Bolton, aged 14 years and 6 months.

She leaves many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Farewell, dear Alice.

Dearest ALICE, thou hast left us,
We thy loss most deeply feel;
But ‘tis God that hast bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.
Ah, little thought this heart of mine,
In pleasure’s golden hours,
That they so soon would fade away
Like summer’s fragile flowes;
And as I pressed they velvet cheek,
And calmed thy bowing fears,
I little thought that I so soon
Should be in grief and tears.
