The Ordnance Department of Virginia. – About ninety hands are daily employed in fabricating, repairing, and getting ready arms for use by the troops of the Virginia State Line. These hands receive on an average about three dollars per diem. The officers appointed by the State and in control of this force are as follows, namely: Charles Dimmock, Brevet Brigadier General and Chief of Ordnance – pay, that of a Colonel of the Confederate army; Lewis V. Backholtz, Captain of Ordnance and in charge of the Laboratory – pay, that of a Confederate States Captain; P. G. Coghlan, Captain of Ordnance and in charge of the Department at Richmond – pay, that of a Captain C.S.A., and George W. Duesberry, Jr., Clerk – pay, $1,250 per annum.
