From the Richmond Dispatch, 7/25/1864, p.1, c 5
Trial Postponed – the trial of Granville Montelle, charged with shooting a free negro named Susan Hill, which was set for Saturday before Judge Lyons, did not take place. The prisoner, through his counsel, moved for a postponement till the next term of the court, upon the ground of the absence of Joseph Parker, a most important witness in his favor, which motion was acceded to, and the prisoner remanded to jail.
The Court, in consideration of the earnest efforts which were made by Montell’s sureties to secure his arrest, has revoked the order declaring a forfeiture of his bail, and therefore they will not be required to pay over the sum of ten thousand dollars, the amount in which he was held to bail.
