From the Richmond Whig, 4/1/1865

FUNERAL OF JOHN M. DANIEL. - At 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the remains of John M. Daniel, accompanied by a large number of his friends and relatives, and Messrs. James McDonald, Dr. G. W. Bagby, Richard F. Walker, H. Rives Pollard, Thos. H. Winn, and C. F. Cary - pall-bearers - were taken to the 2d Presbyterian Church, near the corner of 5th and Main streets, where appropriate funeral ceremonies were performed. The Reverend Dr. Hoge, pastor of the church, preached a sermon from the following text: "For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass." while he paid an eloquent and feeling tribute to the genius, the unyielding principle and splendid literary attainments of the deceased, he, at the same time, impressed upon his hearers, in thrilling language, the worthlessness of all those in the hour of death, when compared with that peace which passeth all understanding. We have never listened to a discourse upon a similar occasion which was more eloquent and impressive.
